PHOENIX: Native American crafts and culture take center stage Saturday and Sunday (March 7-8) during the 40th annual Heard Museum Guild Indian Fair and Market. The festival features handmade crafts and artwork - such as baskets, jewelry, pottery, textiles and kachina dolls - of more than 350 top Native American artists, plus a variety of foods (such as the popular fry bread). Music and dance performances, which run throughout the day, include exhibition hoop dancing, Apache crown dancing and the chicken-scratch stylings of Lyle Reams and the Ga:ak Akimel Waila Band. WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.: Get a taste of the life on an 18th century sea voyage during the seven-month North American visit of the HM Bark Endeavour replica, docked here Saturday through March 15. The ship, a re-creation of the original Endeavour that carried British explorer Capt. James Cook on his expedition to Australia, begins its tour at Peanut Island (in the Port of Palm Beach, accessible via ferry from Currie Park). An informational display on shore introduces the ship's history. On board the floating museum, visitors can explore the crew's mess area, cramped quarters and the room in which Sir Joseph Banks conducted his botanical work. After this stop, the Endeavour will sail up the East Coast to Canada, making stops at cities including Charleston, S.C.; Baltimore; New York; and Boston. Information, 1 (703) 519-4556.
WASHINGTON, D.C. Discovery Channel Store: Destination Washington, D.C., opens Saturday (March 7) in the MCI Center. The four-level flagship museum-style store offers products from around the world, interactive exhibits and attractions such as a giant ant colony and a 40-foot cast of the largest T-Rex skeleton ever assembled. Information, 202-639-0908. Also in the nation's capital: ''Jamestown Fort Rediscovered'' is at the National Geographic Society's Explorer's Hall Wednesday (March 11) through May 17. NEW YORK: Artexpo New York, billed as the world's largest art exposition, celebrates its 20th anniversary Saturday through Monday at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. Six hundred exhibitors from 25 countries showcase work from numerous media, including prints, sculpture, painting and ceramics. Among highlights: a collection of new works by Alexandra Nechita, the popular child artist; ''Artexpo New York - Twenty Years of Art History,'' a curated exhibit looking at work displayed at early Artexpo shows; and the Artists Pavilion, featuring new and unknown artists. ELSEWHERE: ''Self-Taught Artists of the 20th Century: An American Anthology,'' begins a six-city U.S. tour at the Philadelphia Museum of Art Tuesday (March 10) through May 17. The exhibit spotlights nearly 300 works by 30-plus outside-the-mainstream artists such as Grandma Moses, Howard Finster and William Traylor; the Philly stop includes a supplemental exhibit of works from local private collections.
