Travel discounts abound in Asia
While several Asian currencies have rebounded in recent weeks, experts say the current wave of travel discounts should last at least through 1998. But keep in mind that airfares and package prices can jump by several hundred dollars during peak summer months. A sampling of specials:
• Japan & Orient Tours' Singapore Special includes round-trip airfare on Northwest Airlines, four nights' hotel, daily breakfast, transfers and a half-day tour for $798 from Los Angeles, San Francisco or Seattle; the add-on fare from 80 other cities is $70. Details, 800-377-1080.
• Overseas Adventure Travel has cut prices on its Thailand and Indonesia trips by as much as $500. The company's 18-day Indonesia Odyssey now costs $3,690 to $3,990, a savings of $300 to $400, including round-trip airfare from Los Angeles, accommodations, most meals and sightseeing. • Rates at Westin Hotels & Resorts' Asia and Pacific properties have been cut up to 50% through Sept. 15, with the best deals for stays booked at least three weeks in advance. Details, 800-937-8461.
• Ritz-Carlton is offering discounted summer packages at hotels in Kuala Lumpur, Bali, Singapore, Osaka, Shanghai, Hong Kong and Seoul. Through August, Millennia Singapore rates start at $185 a night; upgrading to club level is $17. Details, 800-241-3333.
• Malaysia Airlines offers four nights' free accommodation at various destinations in Malaysia for any two passengers flying together on a ticket to Malaysia.
