South Beach mag's hottest fitness spot

For a day of fitness followed by a night on the town, SHAPE magazine has picked its nine ''Hippest Hotspots.''

And New York, with its shop 'til you drop attitudes and power lunches, doesn't make the hip parade.

South Beach in Miami Beach, Fla., is the No. 1 SHAPE ideal, where you can bike and blade right on by pastel-hued art deco hotels and restaurants, and sail and snorkel in cool blue water. By night, dance in an open-air club, complete with a rain forest.

In Montreal, the April issue of the women's health and fitness magazine suggests you make a daytime visit to Tazmahal Rouldome & Skate Park, an indoor in-line skating park. At night, dine on Malaysian food and dance until dawn in all-night discos.

In Portland, Maine, you can explore coves and walk along secluded beaches, before a nightcap brew in an old-brick pub that was once a cannery.

In Philadelphia, tourists should hike or cycle through the Wissahickon, a forested gorge that features historic inns and a covered bridge. By night, head out to Manayunk, a canal area that features sushi bars and nightclubs.

New Orleans ranks No. 5 for a place to shape up with its jog, cycle and blade paths that tunnel under live oaks. For jazz nights, eat crawfish and crabs.

Chicago; Austin, Texas; Denver, and Vancouver, British Columbia, are the other ranked cities. Their nighttime offerings in their ranked order are: jazz, boogie, brew pubs and swing dance.
